Hugging the waterfront at the tip of Granville Island, it's easy to forget you're in the heart of the city at this calming 85-room boutique property, characterised by a warm laid-back West Coast ambience. If you don't want to relax too much, you can spend days checking out the bustling attractions on your doorstep.

A bit of a hidden gem, this hotel occupies the tip of a former industrial peninsula (it's never actually been an island) that's now an artsy paradise of galleries, boutique stores and craft outlets. Decked out in exposed wood and soothing dark earth tones, this charming, modern boutique hotel fits right in to the mix. Character rooms include wood-ceilinged executive suites and chintzy standard rooms: many have views of the watery vistas of False Creek. Alongside free high-speed Internet access and in-room fridges, there's a health center with a swanky roof top Jacuzzi: a good spot to stay warm while you watch the rain. Save some time to hit the Dockside Brewing Company bar, though. This on-site beer maker - check out those shiny copper tanks - creates a clutch of limited edition brews for connoisseur quaffers.
