Well-located for all the Granville St party action, the old Dufferin hotel building has been reinvented with a contemporary makeover and a raft of on-site extras, including a restaurant, wine bar and beer store.

The century-old Dufferin had become one of the seedier downtown hotels before being completely revamped and reinvented as the Moda in 2006. While the makeover hasn't quite delivered an ultra-swanky boutique property, the new approach is a vast improvement. The best old-school features - mosaic lobby floor and high ceilings - have been retained, while the 57 rooms have been given a cooler mod feel, with loungy furnishings, flatscreen TVs and - most importantly - brand new bathrooms. As an older property, some of the rooms are quite small and a lack of air conditioning means you'll be cracking open a window in summer. (The Moda is on a noisy street corner, so ask for a view-deficient back room if you also crave peace and quiet.) There's an on-site wine bar and Italian restaurant, as well as a beer store with some excellent regional brews.
