It's not quite grand (actually it's not even close) but it's hard to fault the rates at this well-located property that's a step up from the usual budget/backpacker option. It's like a hotel that's full of those basic private rooms most hostels offer on the side.On the Granville St party strip, this older but recently refurbished budget hotel has a hard time justifying the word grand in its name. In fact, if you forget that label altogether you'll feel far more satisfied with your stay. Ranged over two floors, the small, basic rooms have a mishmash of older furnishings, as well as fridges, sinks, elderly TVs and in-room safes. Each floor has eight shared bathrooms and there's a comfy lounge on one floor with a large-screen TV. There's also a well-equipped, hostel-style kitchen if you don't want to partake of Granville St's cheap pizza joints. Extras include on-site laundry (per load 1.50) and free wi-fi in the lobby (there's also an internet computer available at 1.00 per 15 minutes). Rates include full breakfast at the bar next door. To avoid the Granville party clamour, ask for a room at the back.
