Open since 1941, Hotel Carsson offers a touch of honest-to-goodness, old-fashioned class in the heart of the Microcentro. Considering the location, comfort of the rooms and the yesteryear elegance of the place, it's a pretty good deal.A long, stately hallway leads past a breakfast area to the hotel lobby, dominated by a handsome chandelier and large fake flower arrangement. Just outside the lobby is the pretty little garden (unfortunately empty of seats). The rooms are fine and quiet, and all sport little chandeliers. Charming little touches include writing tables, night stands and reading lights, and the red bedspreads complement the patterned carpets in color schemes you likely haven't seen in years. They're kept spotlessly clean, and the bathrooms are big. For a four-star hotel, it's a good deal, and even better if you can snag a superior (which will only cost you a few more pesos).

You're half a block off the pedestrian shopping mecca of Calle Florida, so put on your walking shoes and get ready for crowds. Then hit the Centro Cultural Borges for excellent art. Wander east past Puerto Madero and take a long stroll along the Costanera Sur; towards the southern end you'll find loads of cheap parrillas (grill houses) with outdoor seating.
