Occupying the historic Torre Bencich (built in 1929, it was the city's first skyscraper), this converted landmark has been regarded one of the city's prize hotels since it opened in 2000. From the sharply designed rooms, to the library, to the jockey club style of the downstairs cafe, the Sofitel is pure luxury.Entering the hotel, you're threatened with a Las Vegas experience; a giant Art Deco, pillared wall and an outrageously huge chandelier loom over the reception area. But it's far too classy to be Vegas. To give you an idea of the theme they're shootin' for, the hotel's cafe was modelled after Buenos Aires' prestigious jockey clubs of the early 1900s. The 'Bibliothéque' is filled with French and Argentine literature and a smattering of design and architecture books. Even the fitness centre is done up in style, with hardwood floors and crown moulding. While it's hard to imagine anyone spending too much time in the tiny lap pool, the fitness centre provides refreshment after a hard day pounding the city. Finally, one of the city's most renowned restaurants - the Mediterranean Le Sud - is located right off the lobby.

Certainly, the neighbourhood's prestigious art galleries are worth a peek, if only to pick up a little something for the guest bedroom back home. Stroll down to Plaza San MartÃn and over to Calle Florida for a romp through pedestrians and leather touts. And from there, head west on Santa Fe, for block after block of shop, shop shopping!
