From the looking-glass pool in the cement-floor lobby to the in-room espresso makers, Design Suites is pure eye candy, top-to-bottom fun for the minimalist in everyone. Tables, chairs, paintings, glasses - everything was designed specifically for the hotel, meaning you'll never find a place quite like it.Opened in 1999, this place is as much an exhibit as it is an hotel, although the modernist décor can be a bit chilly at times. Black-suited gentlemen mind the front, while sophisticated guests hang out round the decorative lobby pool. A small wine bar will keep you well hydrated, and furnishings, such as glass-top tables, design-school chairs and slick lighting, will keep you distracted from the world outside. All 48 rooms have cement walls adorned with some wild-eyed piece of abstract art. Finishing touches include carefully displayed wine goblets, industrial-style coffee tables and little water jars filled with coloured marbles. It's a good way to feed your rock-star image for a night or two. There's one computer with internet access for guests and complimentary access to a nearby gym.

No bones about it, the best attraction near here is the Cementerio de la Recoleta. Out front, don't miss BA's biggest craft fair on Plaza Intendente Alvear; it's best on weekends. When you're done exploring this area, check out the art exhibits and bookstore at nearby Centro Cultural Recoleta. Catch some live jazz or tango at outstanding Notorious (tel: 4815-8473; Av Callao 966).
