The Mar Ipanema may not dazzle with ocean views and gilt-trimmed lobbies like other hotels in this neighborhood, but for the price its small, nicely maintained rooms are an excellent option. The hotel's best feature is its proximity to the beach, just two blocks away.
The rooms feature a trim, modern design with decent beds, good lighting and an inviting colour scheme. A few of the minuses: there's no view, which is hardly relevant if you plan to spend your day out on the beach or exploring the city, and the carpeted standards could use an update. As elsewhere in the area, the best rooms are on the upper stories. Here you'll find more space and better design, with wood floors. A pleasant restaurant, Madelenna, serves traditional Brazilian fare on the ground floor.
