Set in a handsome white building overlooking Copacabana beach, the Olinda Othon is indeed a classic. Its oversized marble lobby, complete with chandeliers, oriental carpets and grand piano has an old-world charm, and although its rooms aren't as sprightly as they were in the '40s, it's still an atmospheric place to stay.

The best (deluxe) rooms, face the ocean and are only marginally more expensive than the superiors, so if you have the means go for one of these. The deluxes are also roomier and have antique, dark-wood headboards and bathtubs in the bathrooms - along with old, blue ceramic tiles harking back quite a few decades. Other classic features are the crown moulding around the rooms, the old-school windows (yes, you'll have to put some oomph into lifting them up) and the quaint blue carpeting. The suites have a wild colour scheme - white furniture, lime-green walls and wood floors. Renovations are on the way for the Othon Classic, but the management assured us that they wouldn't destroy the features that make this a unique hotel among a sea of glass and steel.
