A solid value for its trim, modern rooms, this 13-story hotel is nicely located within a short stroll to both Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Guest quarters are set with pressed wood floors and colorful bedspreads, with big windows bringing in decent light.Light-coloured woods are the element of choice in the airy, clean-swept rooms. A touch of artwork (a block print of a vaguely tropical scene) adds a little something to the otherwise standard accommodations. Suites also have a spa tub separate from the shower. Despite the proximity to the sands, there are no beach views here, though some rooms (and the small swimming pool) offer surreal views of the favela (shanty town) Pavão Pavãozinho, which is pretty low-key as far as favelas go (ie no problems here). Most guests rate the staff as particularly helpful and friendly.

For a stunning view of Copacabana beach, stroll down to the Confeitaria Colomobo (tel: 3201 4049) located inside the Forte de Copacabana. At the outdoor tables, you can sit beneath shady palm trees, enjoying cappuccino, salads, quiche or crepes as young soldiers from the fort file past. To get there, you'll have to pay admission (2.00) to the Forte de Copacabana.
