Who says you can't get a decent bargain in this town? This handsome Georgian house is smack on St Stephen's Green - any more central and you're sleeping with the Lord Mayor - but is priced like an upscale suburban townhouse. Which this place is, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the green and a pleasant rear garden for summer breakfasts.

Three townhouses in one, Staunton's has a fairly rich history. Originally constructed in 1750, one of the houses (No 84) was the home of parliamentarian Henry Grattan, the driving force behind the Irish Parliament dissolution in 1801 with the Act of Union. His next door neighbour was Lord Iveagh, a far more important man in Dublin affairs as the one and only Arthur Guinness. His house is now the Department of Foreign Affairs, so you're in pretty good company - you might be checking in at the same time the minister is greeting some foreign dignitary. When you get to your room, you'll find that it's perfectly adequate without being anything special. Although rooms are fairly spacious, and graced with big windows with views of either St Stephen's Green or the equally pleasant Iveagh Gardens at the back, they could all do with a spruce up. Still, for the price and location this is a pretty sweet deal.
