Behind the Victorian façade, the lobby is a faithful recreation of a 1930s hotel, complete with dark wood floors, deep-red leather Chesterfield couches and heavy velvet drapes. The 70-odd rooms don't quite bring The Maltese Falcon to mind, but they're handsomely furnished and very comfortable.

It's tough to be good in Temple Bar - cramped spaces, high rents and greedy developers do not a good hotel make - but the Paramount makes out like a bandit precisely because it doesn't behave like one. The dark browns that dominate the colour scheme are vaguely reminiscent of the retro style, but that's about it; for the rest, you're left with a room that is modern in every respect and will not disappoint if you value roominess and comfort above decor. One caveat: go for a room that is at least a couple of storeys up, if you don't fancy singing along to the tracks from the Turk's Head bar below, an Art Deco madhouse that is one of the city's most popular late-night bars.
