These days it's all about boutique chic, and this marvellously atmospheric hotel on trendy Dawson St has got it just right. Up two flights of steep stairs are 29 lovely Asian-influenced white rooms with oriental rattan furniture, exotic velvet throws, TV, air-con and minibar.

It's all about individualised designer luxury here, with nary a generic look in sight. There's a pretty decent designer pedigree too, as the whole look was the work of local aesthete Sarah Murray and Parisian Miguel Cancio Martins. His resume includes the doll-up of Raffles in Singapore as well as the creation of the three Man Ray resto-bars in New York, LA and Paris. Our only suggestion is to ask for a room toward the top of the building, if only to put as much distance between you and the street below. As well as the Belle Epoque Balzac restaurant, the hotel's mini-empire also includes one of the city's trendiest bars, SamSara, and a second restaurant, the Thai-influenced Tiger Becs. Central, cool and very contemporary, this is one of the better beds in town.
