Address: 23 upper o connell street , Dublin 2, Ireland Show on map
Well-heeled Americans and elderly groups on shopping breaks to the capital swear by this landmark hotel, the fanciest on O'Connell St, which opened its doors for business in 1817. The understated grandeur of the public spaces promises much; the refurbished rooms are spacious even if the decor is a little brash. In an effort to attract a new generation of the platinum card set and a chunk of the all-important corporate crowd, the owners have undertaken a substantial refurbishment of the whole property, shedding its cosy granny parlour feel to reveal a brighter, smarter, more modern look. The rooms have all been brought up to contemporary standard, but the biggest improvements have been made to the executive rooms - oversized beds, ISDN lines and separate shower and baths - and the handful of suites, which now have Jacuzzis, bathroom TVs, a remote control gas fireplace and a sit-up cocktail bar. The latter may be great for that quiet, late-night rendezvous, but it's no substitute for a drink in the handsome lobby bar, still one of the better watering holes in the city.

A bit of shopping in the newly refurbished Henry St followed by a spot of culture in the Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square and a play at the Gate (tel: 874 4045; 1 Cavendish Row) around the corner. But be sure to sandwich your cultural pursuits with dinner at the Michelin-starred Chapter One (tel: 873 2266; 18-19 Parnell Sq), in the basement of the Dublin Writers Museum, next door to Hugh Lane.
