Just off the well-beaten path in the northern suburb of Phibsborough is Charleville. Made up of a terraced row of houses that is the height of 19th-century Victorian elegance and luxury, it offers a warm welcome and a comfortable sleep for a mere fraction of the price you'd pay five minutes' down the road, closer to the centre.

Heavy chandeliers, deep wingback armchairs and a roaring fire set the tone in the quiet residents' lounge, where you can chat with guests and the owners, whose classy, antiquarian tastes are in evidence throughout the house. These folks love the old stuff but are far from old and stuffy and give proper credence to the old cliche of a 'home away from home'. The bedrooms are large - far bigger than the standard B&B room in Dublin - and are decorated with plenty of floral chintz that somehow manages to stay on the right side of cosy. It's a little off-side alright, but not that much - the bus takes five minutes into the heart of O'Connell St while the walk will do wonders for you on a pleasant day.
