Comfort by name, comfortable by nature, this recently opened chain hotel right on Smithfield Square has been a hit with visitors who want a central bed and couldn't care less about the smooth, totally unoriginal design.

Middle-of-the-road chain hotels like this one are a great bet if your idea of style can be found in a flat-pack bought in bulk from the likes of Ikea. The dominant colour scheme is thoroughly inoffensive beiges and browns, but what really catches the eye are the bright, airy spaces of the bigger-than-normal rooms, most of which have floor-to-ceiling windows. Although the rooms all come with the usual, unexciting amenities that will let you make your own cup of tea and press your trousers (does anyone actually use a trouser press?), the underfloor heating in the bathrooms is a nice touch. But this hotel doesn't expect any of its guests to spend any more time indoors than necessary, so it's real draw is the location: close enough to the action to get there on foot but far enough away that they don't have to charge the earth.
