In some ways this former palace is the ideal Madrid address because you are right in the centre, but surrounded by traffic-free shopping streets. Daytime noise levels are high, but you'll sleep like a baby most nights. Free high-speed internet in every room and a multitude of digital TV channels are other bonuses. Service is outstanding.

Rooms vary in shape and size - the corner rooms with two balconies are the best - but there are a few mainstays: modern black-and-white photos on the walls, light colour schemes, super-comfortable beds, parquetry floors, high-tech bathrooms with hydromassage showers and the latest fittings, armchairs and writing desks. Some of the attic rooms on the top floor may not have balconies but they do have atmospheric, wooden-beamed sloping roofs. Whenever you're out exploring the city, look up at the balconies and you'll quickly understand that they are some of the largest in the city - put the armchairs outside and you've the perfect vantage point from which to watch Madrid's endlessly fascinating passing parade.
