Opened in 2005, this is one of Madrid's most stylish (and most professionally run) hotels and a fantastic place to stay. You get the feeling the interior designer licked his or her lips and enjoyed creating this masterwork of understated, minimalist luxury. The colour scheme is blacks, whites and greys, with dark-wood floors and furnishings. Splashes of fuchsia and lime-green - used sparely but to brightening effect - provide colour but without overburdening the overall aesthetic. Flat-screen TVs in every room, the latest bathroom fittings (some rooms have hydromassage showers), Internet access points in every room and even a laptop in some round out the effect of clean lines and latest innovations. The only downside is that some of the rooms facing onto the interior patio could be a little claustrophobic if you stayed too long. There's a reading room, an intimate bar and a basement breakfast room that is tastefully restored with the original arches and stone washbasins left in situ. The overall effect is a soothing respite from the big city noise just a block from the hotel door.

Catch an opera at the Teatro Real (tel: 902 244 848; Plaza de Oriente), then stroll through Plaza de Oriente - where Madrid weaves its magic in the early evening. Just in case you're so taken by the experience that you consider buying one of the apartments overlooking the plaza, consider this - these apartments are some of the most exclusive patches of real estate in southern Europe.
