The Gritti Palace was originally built in 1525 to house a Doge of Venice, Andrea Gritti. Since opening as a luxury hotel in the last century it has played host to royalty of both the crowned and Hollywood variety and is considered one of Venice's best places to stay. The sign at the edge of the lobby politely notes that only guests are invited beyond that point, and no wonder: otherwise, gawkers would have a field day at the Gritti Palace. This palace was built in 1525 as the home of Andrea Gritti, Doge of Venice, and royalty and celebrities have been vying for corner suites here ever since. Only 15 of the 90 rooms have a Grand Canal view, but the accommodation itself is a Venetian sight to see: baroque beds set into theatrical niches; hand-painted panelled walls hung with Gritti family portraits; museum-piece chandeliers and gilded mirrors; and heirloom antique furnishings at every turn. Guests who shop hit Calle Larga XXII Marzo with the help of a personal shopping service to snag the best finds, then gloat over their booty at Bar Longhi, named after salon satirist Pietro Longhi, whose humorous paintings grace these antique mirrored walls.

The most sensational recent addition to the Gritti is young rising-star chef Daniel Turco, who succeeds in distracting diners from terrace views of the Grand Canal with his inventive, melting-pot Mediterranean cuisine - think pistachio cheese-stuffed tortellini drizzled with saffron cream. Whether you're staying here or not, a sunny lunch here watching gondolas go by is worth the splurge.
In honour of regular guest Ernest Hemingway, the Hemingway Suite facing the Grand Canal features a bedroom, large library, and two bathrooms so that no one gets unduly terse while waiting.
