Don't waste this hotel on your mother (sorry, mum). These rooms are set for romance, swagged in sumptuous silk damask and mood-lit with winking Moroccan lanterns and Murano chandeliers. Soft beds invite spooning and heavy curtains keep dawn at bay all day in this chic retreat for cocooning urbanites.

Hello, gorgeous. This hotel is so easy on the eye, you'll feel sexy by association. Standard doubles are plenty deluxe, but anyone on a honeymoon or practicing for one might prefer a themed room with Jacuzzi. The Sala Noire is a spice-route vision in chocolate and deep purple. The tasteful gold-toned suite and Fireplace Room are bland by comparison with the Doge's Room, flushed a deep red and topped with gold Murano chandeliers and gilt mirrors. The hotel's signature blend of modern and historic is usually seamless - but modern sensitivities do clash with history in the Moor's Room, where rather unfortunate antique statues of African servants flank the bed. The cushioned communal terrace is hung with Moroccan lamps for memorable sunsets, the cosy sitting room offers Internet access, and the breakfast room compares to the coolest lounge-bars in London.
