Lisbon's belle époque dame is beautiful and boy does she know it. Situated between Rossio and bustling Praça dos Restauradores, the Avenida still turns heads with mirror-like marble floors, huge chandeliers and a sweeping gilt staircase that leads to plush quarters.Palatial is indeed the word that springs to mind when you enter this hotel's marble lobby and clap eyes on blingy crystal chandeliers, precious Ming porcelain and the Gone with the Wind-style staircase lit by a magnificent skylight. The high-ceilinged, mint-and-cream rooms are lavish and handsome, with plump beds, stripy walls and gilt mirrors; the best overlook Rossio to Castelo de São Jorge. The old-fashioned bathrooms are, however, a bit of an anticlimax. There's a tiny gym, but little else to suggest the 21st century, as the Avenida prefers to wallow in the decadence of yesteryear. Sip martinis in the wood-panelled bar or tea in the sublime lounge replete with antiques, red velvet and fountains.

Cross Rossio to Largo de São Domingos, where A Ginjinha (Largo de São Domingos 8) draws sundown tipplers to its cobbles with tiny shots of ginjinha (cherry brandy). With a kick like a mule and a cherry in the bottom, the liqueur has been inebriating Lisboetas since the 1840s. Hand over your euro to see what all the fuss is about.
Celebrated architect José Luís Monteiro dreamed up this belle époque confection and the nearby neo-Manueline Rossio station.
