The Accura is an eyesore, so don't say you weren't warned, but its rooftop has some of the best views in the city and the rooms are top value for money. It's also in an excellent position, a short walk from the sights but away from the hustle of the crowds and touts.A pastiche of timber veneer and ruffles, with piped music, echoey spaces, and cheap kilims (woven rugs). But don't let the lobby put you off. The rooms, thankfully, are understated: modern and well-appointed with minibars and cable TV. The ones on the top floor have knockout views. There are also family rooms, which are hard to find in this city. Unfortunately the buffet breakfast is served in the ugly breakfast hall so you'll need to make a special effort to climb to the terrace - once you're there you'll forgive Accura for any lack of style. Up on the hill here it overlooks the riffraff, with sensational views of the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya, the Sea of Marmara and beyond. This largish hotel is popular with groups so you'll need to book well ahead.

Underneath the square beside the hotel is Binbirdirek Cistern, built by Constantine in AD330. It's not as grand or popular as its cousin, the Basilica Cistern, but there's a very atmospheric restaurant and it often hosts concerts in summer. Talk about atmosphere!
