In an older-style but fully restored building, sleek Hotel Daphne is one of the newest hotels on the block. Although it's a few steps off the end of the Hippodrome, it's still very close to the sights, but just far enough away from the press of crowds and touts.Daphne is a mini version of a five-star hotel, with an immaculate lobby, well-groomed staff and muted earthy tones in well-appointed bedrooms. Except here the polish is a bit thin and the staff aren't well trained enough to know you don't look people up and down (grrr). That said we loved the rooms: great-looking style and with first-rate beds that pass the bounce test with flying colours. The bathrooms are spotless and roomy by Istanbul standards. The best rooms are those with sea views. The rooftop terrace has marvellous views, not of the tourist sights per se, but out west over Kumkapi and the ships in the Sea of Marmara. You also won't have to huff and puff your way to the top here: Daphne has a lift. There's barely a hair out of place at Daphne - let's hope it ages well.
