Lonely Planet review

A family-run hotel since 1854, Wandl is certainly doing something right to keep guests happy and the big hotel chains from snapping it up. Its great location and wide choice of rooms also pitch in to make this one of the better choices in the centre.

Wandl is right in the thick of things but occupies a very quiet corner of the Innere Stadt, with the bass of the occasional bus and the clippity-clop of horse hooves on tarseal the only sounds to reach room windows. The front facade looks directly onto the backside of Peterskirche, which, as backsides go, is a rather fine specimen. Many of the rooms are arranged around pretty inner courtyards and range from quite plush affairs with ornamental carpets and fancy furniture (one features historical frescoes) to stripped-back digs (but still highly adequate) with shared facilities. Period furniture, antique pieces and helpful staff fill the reception, but note that tour groups do the same on a regular basis over the summer months.
