Altstadt is arguably the finest pension/small hotel in Vienna. Charming, tasteful, quirky, arty, welcoming - it's everything a good pension should be, and just that little bit more. The only problem you might have, though, is booking a room…

It's hard to fault a place that goes to so much effort to maintain such a high standard, particularly when it succeeds so admirably. Each room is individually decorated, but they all have one thing in common: tasteful modern decor that's not overcooked, and the right consistency of art, practicality, comfort, and above all, warmth. Add to this brew high ceilings, plenty of space and natural light, and you have a room you'll find hard to vacate, even for the excellent breakfast. The breakfast room and common lounge easily hold their own, with comfy lounge chairs, an open fireplace, deep red walls and a grand piano to top it all off. If the weather is not to your liking, hang out and rifle through the owner's CD collection while taking advantage of free tea and coffee. Staff are genuinely affable and the artwork is from the owner's personal collection.
