Inside this grand Art Deco building, the Grand Hotel Aston's guest rooms are pretty businesslike, but in summer there's no cooler view across Nice than from its panoramic rooftop swimming pool.

Privately run, with poised, professional staff, this is a big 150-room place that lends itself well to business travellers. There's a smart, streamlined lobby with Internet access and international newspapers, with leather and velour lounges; and a suite of in-room amenities like air-con, pay TV, a minibar, and 24-hour room service. Rooms are modern affairs with granite desks and square timber bed heads, some are L-shaped and incorporate red sofa beds with oversize cushions and contemporary prints. Plus you get a full-on American breakfast in the mezzanine overlooking the lobby, which is topped by an opaque Art Deco skylight. Best of all (apart from that pool-with-a-view) is the location, close to both the old town and the beach.
