You'll find this gracious 1890s place facing the Albert 1 gardens just moments from the aromatic sights, sounds and scents of the old town and a few short blocks from the beach.Behind a newly steam-cleaned curved corner peach facade, the pick of the rooms are the four romantic 'round' rooms, which all have semi-circular balconies (they cost just a handful of euros more, but they're often out of reach, especially in summer, as demand's sky-high). Some bathrooms are so tiny you have to squeeze past the toilet to reach the shower, but they're bright and clean. Upgrades to the hotel's 50 rooms include red and white matching bedspreads and curtains. There's no air-conditioning, but there are double-glass windows, as well as a caged timber and glass lift so you won't have to scale the stairs. Breakfast is in the salon, or in your room, and wi-fi's free. Staff are charming and helpful.

After strolling along the market stalls of cours Saleya, stop at Chez René Socca (2 rue Miralhéti) and squeeze in with the local for a glass of local plonk and a couple of niçois tapas, socca or petits farcis.
Time it right and you may be able to score free parking on the street out front. Between 09:00 and 12:00 and 14:00 and 18:00 there is a cost, but parking is free outside those hours.
