Nestled discreetly in leafy Higgovale, Kensington Place is one of Cape Town's ultimate boutique hotels. Both the rooms and public spaces are designed with effortless flair and sport a plethora of extras, from free Internet access to fresh bowls of fruit.

The lobby bar and lounge here are enough to make you never want to leave the hotel - the lounge boasts a wonderful beaten copper fireplace, perfect for curling up next to when the winter winds howl off the mountain outside. The rooms are decorated in oh-so-sophisticated shades of cream and brown, accentuated with bold splashes of colour from burnt orange cushions to bright red chairs. The bathrooms are opulent, with the lucky guests in room 7 luxuriating in a sunken bath next to a glass window that looks out onto a lily pond. The walls throughout are hung with fine art photographs and contemporary paintings, and lacquer vases of orchids and lilies add an elegant Japanese touch. African notes are present too - look for the coffee tables upholstered in spotted cowskin.
