Lonely Planet review

Modern African design and Joburg chic combine to tasteful effect here, in pleasant grounds with a genuine sense of idyll despite the hotel's location in a busy neighbourhood. You can rest assured that at number 10, every effort will be taken. Each room has its own name and subtly unique design signature, evidence of the meticulous work involved in turning this former family mansion into a boutique hotel. Owner Christof van Staden describes the effect as 'classical understatement', but thankfully there's more statement than classicism on display. While the swimming pool offers little privacy to guests (perhaps explaining why it seems rather underused), the restaurant and phenomenal wine cellar are a favourite with locals. It's also rare to be able to compliment a hotel for its lavatories, but Ten Bompas scores here as well. The toilet in the lobby area is what you might call 'high convenience': a unisex loo replete with steel, glass, sunken lights and underfloor televisions.
