It's certainly luxurious, but there's something lacking in this deluxe 173-room hotel. The rooms are perfectly fine, the furnishings pleasant enough (the bathrooms are tiny), but the whole package just doesn't add up to the high-end prices.

It's a far cry from its grand opening in 1964, when its rooms were graced by such luminaries as Orson Welles, Louis Armstrong and Ray Charles. These days, the majority of visitors are cut from a strictly business cloth, many of them hailing from the powerhouse economies of Southeast Asia. The hotel has two rooms for wheelchair users and four floors for nonsmokers. Bicycles are available for rent in the lobby. The hotel has long promised rooftop sporting facilities to match the pace being set by the city's newer top-end openings, but so far there's been little movement in that regard. Guests have to cross a busy street into Tivoli Park to enjoy a steam bath or a sauna. There's also a casino next door.
