Our favourite of the high-end hotels, though its location is less convenient than others in this category. Modern rooms have all the expected amenities, plus there is a big pool and great views of the volcano and city. It's a chain hotel, yes, but so are all of San Salvador's top hotels.

The Radisson is at the top of San Salvador's hotel heap, both literally and figuratively. It's got the classiest rooms in town and, perched on a hillside in swanky Colonia Escalón, has terrific views too. Rooms in the main tower have everything you'd expect - flat-screen cable TV, wi-fi, security box - plus a few extras not available at other high-end digs, like marble desks and a mobile phone to use during your stay. There's an older all-suite three-star annex in back; the units are spacious but smell of Marlboros. Radisson's swimming pool is the best in town - good for kids and museum-weary grown-ups. A bus passes in front, but you'll probably want to get around by car or cab.
