Not-quite-colonial but trying really hard to be, the quiet Hotel Villa Real offers excellent amenities and services for budget travellers. Plus, located just up the street from the Metrocentro mall means Hollywood movies and Salvadoran shopping.Despite its slightly kitsch take on colonial style, this is a well-maintained and very comfortable place to stay. Guests are treated to spotless rooms with the little extras that make a difference when you really want them: telephone, cable TV, air-con, and Internet access. Complimentary breakfast is served in a clean and comfy dining room that gets lots of sun. All of this makes you wonder how long the prices are going to stay in the budget range.

Two blocks downhill is Metrocentro mall, with ATMs, grocery store, boutiques, restaurants, and movies. Next door is another mall, Metrosur, with Internet and a salsa club called Pueblo Viejo. The nearby Calle Lamatepec is home to a string of late-night restaurant-bars. Continuing west, Calle Lamatepec becomes Calle Los Andes, where Los Tacos de Paco is a funky taco and poetry spot.
