Built in 1964 (and likely remodeled only once since then), the 11-floor Hotel Sussex is one of Córdoba's oldest hotels. It's worth the cash only if you get a room facing the plaza, on the 8th floor or higher. The handsome wood-paneled lobby and the views over the main plaza from the hotel's upper rooms are the Sussex's main draws. This is a classic Argentine hotel, with an outdated atmosphere, tie-clad bellhops and a sense of history that's fading like the paint in the hallways. White leather couches, old chairs, a grand piano, a huge reception desk and giant mirrors add to the business-lounge ambience of the lobby. The rooms are spacious, and feel straight out of the 1960s. The no-frills but perfectly kept bathrooms are adorned with beige toilets and bidets, and giant old air-con units keep the rooms cool (though hardly quiet!). The 11th-floor breakfast room is closed, but you can usually get a staff member to take you inside for the views. Otherwise try the rooftop pool area - you can't swim in the pool these days, but the photo-ops are great.

Hanging around Plaza San Martín (it's practically right out the front door) is a must. After checking out the cathedral, wander around the historic Manzana Jesuítica (Jesuit Block) to absorb some of the finest colonial architecture in the country.
