The elegant, French-owned Novotel separates its tariffs according to whether rooms are in the contemporary wing or the more expensive, but vastly more characterful colonial wing, where each room is different from the rest. It's the best of both the Old and New Worlds.

A huge, glass-covered fountain courtyard meets the eye as you enter this streamlined hotel, designed for no-nonsense business and leisure travellers. With just 99 rooms, the Novotel is small enough to devote personal attention to guests, but still large enough to offer every service, including a concierge, well-equipped business centre and currency exchange desk. The staff do everything to ensure a smooth stay. Rooms in the contemporary wing have only cookie-cutter furnishings, but more spacious rooms in the colonial section make us swoon. The hotel is an especially good choice for families, and rates include a buffet breakfast. The narrow street outside is chock-full of fine jewellery, clothing and artisan craft shops.
