Unusually haute for the San Blas neighborhood, this polished three-star hotel inside an 18th-century colonial house makes for a soothing retreat. Arranged around a courtyard, straightforward rooms are not as luxurious as the rates would suggest, but they're spacious, and furnished with traditional textiles, extralong beds and in-room safes, while upper-story suites have kitchenettes and balconies with city views. The staff provide personalized attention and a bouquet of little luxuries for guests.

The Casa San Blas is an unusual find: a polished three-star hotel in an offbeat neighbourhood full of art galleries, workshops, cafes and museums. The guests here are mainly middle-aged package tourists, but independent travellers looking for more comfort than the norm will also find respite here. Arranged around a colonial courtyard, surprisingly simple rooms are not as luxurious as the rates would suggest, but they're spacious, clean and furnished with traditional textiles, extra-long beds, in-room safes, cable TV and telephones. Upper-storey suites also have kitchenettes and balconies. All rooms are insulated from serious street noise by double-glazed windows. Oxygen supplements, massage treatments and Internet access are available for a fee, but mountain vistas from the rooftop terrace are free.
