The faded, jaded Hôtel Batha is a classic budget option. Its dull, boxy exterior is one of Fès's most well-known landmarks, overlooking the utterly central Place de l'Istiqlal. You couldn't be better placed for the medina - the Musée Batha is your neighbour and there's parking nearby.

If you're someone who views a hotel as a place to lay your head rather than an experience in itself then this is the place for you. It has 61 comfortable rooms over three balconied floors. The decor is easy on the eye - think pastel-painted cupboards, bright modern tiles and colourful coverlets. The beds might be a touch more tired than you but it's great value for money. There are four internal patios, a cafe, a restaurant, a piano bar, a shop and a big pool (open summer only), which combine to give it a busy Butlins holiday atmosphere. The staff are pretty lackadaisical but if you can stir them from their gossiping they'll answer your questions in French, English and a little Spanish. But beware - hot water is rationed. Don't attempt a shower between 11:00 and 18:00.
