An excellent budget choice that's buried in the medina. From the fountain in the courtyard to the wide, windy roof-terrace, it's packed with local atmosphere. The bon prix and easy-going atmosphere make it a winner with adventure specialists. The place is often packed with young groups who lend a great vibe.

When you meet the affable, multilingual manager Abdul Jalil the Nakhla's success is less surprising. He's extremely efficient, polite and friendly and constantly does the rounds to see if everyone has what they need. The 18 rooms are also a cut above the average budget pad with stripy Souiri coverlets, coloured leather lanterns and neat, tiled shower rooms. Some of the mattresses are a little tired, and the rooms tend to be a tad gloomy given the architecture of the house (most only have internal windows onto the patio). But, hey, there's real satellite TV with over 12 channels to choose from and the rooftop terrace has pretty views and a good restaurant (in summer). Still, with clients like Exodus returning time and again, this friendly little place must be doing something right.
