Lonely Planet review

This large hostel is housed in a listed building, formerly a Victorian medical school. Pine floors, high ceilings and large, open fireplaces create the ambience for a good spot of meet-the-backpacker lounging. Some of the cleverly designed rooms have mezzanine levels, which are great for families. It's one of Dublin's most popular hostels, so book well in advance.
Before there was tourism, Avalon House catered to the thin trickle of adventurers who landed in Dublin. They flood in these days, but Avalon hasn't missed a beat in its hosting duties. It has had to make adjustments, though, like cramming a few more bunks into its rooms making the fit a little more snug than we'd like, but the mezzanines are a relief. The mix of singles and doubles - some en suite - also suffer from a slight lack of space. Downstairs in the public areas is a bright and colourful breakfast room - where a complimentary brekkie is served - and a modern, well-equipped kitchen is perfect for all self-caterers and their culinary needs. There is also the ubiquitous games room, TV lounge, bureau de change and internet facilities.
