Address: 15 eyre square, City centre , Galway city , Ireland Show on map
A Galway landmark since 1845, recently revived during extensive renovations, the grand, grey limestone Great Southern Hotel occupies most of the southern side of the city's open-air oasis, Eyre Square.Chandeliers, tasselled velvet curtains, bevelled mirrors, ivory paisley wall coverings and a leather upholstered reception desk grace the lobby of Galway's first hotel. You could drive a small truck along the corridors, which were built to accommodate women's hooped ballgowns. Rooms are similarly proportioned, many with chandeliers, marble bathrooms and antique furnishings. All 99 rooms have bathtubs. Keyboards serve the interactive TVs, but you can also use the wi-fi or the free online computer in the genteel library, which has a (real) roaring open fire and a grandfather clock. High-flyers can check into a room on the select 'Level 5' floor, with its own executive lounge and bar. If you're hurrying for the train, the magnificent balconied ballroom opens directly onto the platform.
