This church-run pensione, located in the Oltrarno district halfway between the Arno and the Porta Romana, is a decent option if your budget is low and your expectations are moderate. In a city where low-cost accommodation is few and eager travellers many, this place is well worth a gander.
The hostel's best feature is its arcaded and classically Florentine courtyard. When you enter, you're greeted by a large portrait of the Pope for whom the hostel is named. The guests themselves - mostly young backpackers trying to have a little fun - don't have a particularly holy mien. However, the devout older women who preside seem to have made peace with their worldly ways. Rooms are of a decent size, though furnishings are a little battered and quite basic. Communal bathrooms are serviceable but similarly outdated. Likewise, this place gets only passing marks for cleanliness. Still, in a town where reasonably priced budget singles are hard to come by, this place has is a value find.
