This ryokan was built more than 150 years ago, and you'll feel special as soon as you enter the stunning entrance. All rooms have Japanese tatami-mats and are surprisingly spacious. The sumptuous bathtubs are made of hinoki (cypress), a wood famous in Japan for its silky-smooth contours. Employees speak only a little English but they epitomise the best of Japanese grace and hospitality. Even though it is located right on Oike-dori, in the heart of Kyoto's downtown, privacy and comfort are ensured within the walls of the Hiiragiya.
