Clean, minimalist and modern, Andon Ryokan's tiny tatami rooms are a better deal for two people than for one, though solo travellers will enjoy more room to stretch out. This hip and urbane spot - if slightly out of the way - is fabulously unique in design and feel.A beautiful synthesis of industrial design with a traditional Japanese ryokan (inn), the Andon is like a converted warehouse in miniature. Despite the hard edges of metal grillework and polished concrete floors, the atmosphere feels warm and hostel-like. Halls contain simple art pieces in the tokonoma (alcoves), and common areas such as the baths and the 4th-floor jacuzzi are immaculately clean. The tatami rooms have just enough space to accommodate two futon and your bags, but the ryokan's amenities more than make up for the tininess of the rooms. There's free internet access and a DVD player in each room, coin-operated laundry facilities, a common kitchen, friendly English-speaking staff and DVD library. Substantial breakfasts are amazingly cheap, and the tea and coffee are free. Thoughtfully designed and attractively priced, this is a great place to meet other Tokyo travellers.
