With its colourful walls, funky decor and friendly vibe, this has become one Ulaanbaatar's pre-eminent backpacker joints. The setup is more spacious than other apartment guesthouses; it offers two TV lounges and five separate rooms. A young, friendly and totally laid-back management is always willing to take out guests for a night on the town.First impressions are important here and when you walk inside you get an immediately warm and communal feeling. The main lounge is usually peopled with a few backpackers making road trip plans or checking emails. An attached kitchen is often busy with residents cooking up a group meal. The downstairs lounge is a little more secluded. Rooms and bathrooms in the Golden Gobi are clean and well looked after. Dorms include wood-frame bunk beds. If the main guesthouse is full (and it usually is during peak season), guests are put in a second apartment nearby. This annex is not nearly as nice as the main building, but rates remain the same.
