Lydia Masoleng is a former domestic worker (the South African euphemism for maid) who these days is the proud owner of her own business - this comfortable, spacious B&B in the vibrant township of Khayelitsha.
Lydia readily admits she had plenty to learn when she decided to become a B&B proprietor back in 1998. The idea came to her after she was asked to play host to two visiting American ladies through her local church. She's a stickler for cleanliness, and her modern, spacious house, with bright prints on the walls, is always kept spick-and-span. The three guest bedrooms are small but bright, with ceiling fans, chintzy bedcovers and panel heaters for winter; at the time of research she was planning on adding four more. She provides a big breakfast every morning, while for dinner she either cooks up a feast for guests herself, or sends them to her cousin's restaurant 10 minutes' walk away. You can also visit the local shebeen (informal pub) or do a walking tour of the township with local guides.
