The towering glass edifice of Hotel Urban is the epitome of art-inspired, super-stylish designer chic. Opened in late 2004, it's a wonderful antidote to the more classic charm of Madrid's five-star hotels of longer standing.

From the moment you enter the lobby, you know that this is a special place. Life-sized, ancient statues from Papua New Guinea merge seamlessly with minimalist lines and furniture and the glass that seems to cover every surface. The bar, restaurant and sitting areas seem to have sprung from a magazine. The theme continues downstairs with an astonishing exhibition of Egyptian artwork, while even in the rooms there are exceptional and original works of art built into the wall alcoves. Dark-wood floors and dark walls are offset by plenty of light, while the furnishings are as comfortable as you'll find. The dazzling bathrooms have wonderful designer fittings; the washbasins are sublime. And the experience runs throughout the entirety of the hotel - the rooftop swimming pool is one of Madrid's best and the gorgeous terrace has terrific views.
