Compared to budget houses in the Old City, this guesthouse is no bargain even with added design touches. But in this neighbourhood, which has easy access to Chiang Mai University, there isn't as much competition to drive down prices, nor is there the emphasis on selling treks, which provide commissions that subsidise room rates. Considering those factors, Baan Say-La becomes more attractive, free from pressure to buy extra services. The staff are typically fashionable university students, offering a perspective on Thailand's youth culture. The biggest drawback is the nearby Fine Thanks nightclub and its maddening night-time noise.
