When it comes to basic beds, sometimes it's the owner's affability that makes or breaks a place. This tidy apartment-block guesthouse excels in the information category with knowledgeable Aussie-Thai owners.

Follow the stairs past the Thai pedicab suspended over the lobby to the clean and sparse rooms that let in plenty of light, a few stray breezes on the higher floors, and even have some good city views. And don't fret about gobbling up electricity, solar power heats the water. The rooms are just a place to be horizontal, while the guesthouse's gathering place is the ground-floor restaurant dominated by a picnic-style table around which the Australian owner and his Thai wife might dole out trekking advice. The husband has lots of other hobbies, including cruising the backroads on a motorcycle and playing bass in local bar bands. After hearing his stories you'll be sold on multi-day treks and two-wheeled caravans to Laos.
