The 'Pink Palace of the Pacific' is undoubtedly the most iconic hotel in Waikiki. Amidst a swath of white skyscrapers, you can't miss the pink Spanish-Moorish hotel, sitting prettily on the beach. If you want to step back into pre-statehood Hawaii splendor, this is it.

Built in 1927, the Royal Hawaiian was Waikiki's first resort hotel. Notable guests have included President Franklin D. Roosevelt, The Beatles, the Shah of Iran and Clark Gable, and numerous books detail the history of the hotel. Today the Royal Hawaiian comprises the original, low-rise building plus a 17-floor high-rise built in 1969. Surrounding the hotel is a lush garden with over 50 varieties of flora. Bear in mind, however, that while the interior design is ornately Victorian, with rows of pillars and intricate rugs, furnishings are worn, if not slightly shabby. Rooms in the original building can be tiny, with furniture that's surprisingly old (without the charm of being antique). You might find peeling paint or soiled upholstery. Nothing horrendous - just a warning if you're seeking luxury rather than history. The oceanfront location is superb, and the crowd is pleasantly low-key.
